How to spot a leak
A guide from plumbers and drainlayers
Unfortunately, leaks and rain go hand-in-hand, and they can be pretty annoying when they pop up.
Rain also adds stormwater and groundwater to the mix, and to make it harder, leaks, stormwater, and groundwater can all look the same! A lot of our jobs across Winter and early Spring are drainage, but sometimes surface water can get confused for a proper leak. Before giving us or the council a call it’s handy if you can spot the tell-tale signs of a leak.
How to identify leaks, stormwater, and groundwater
WaterCare have compiled a checklist to help identify leaks, versus stormwater or groundwater, so you know what to look out for when calling us.
Groundwater?
Funnily enough groundwater is water that’s on the ground. When we’ve had lots of rain the ground is so saturated it can’t absorb any more water, so it pools on the surface. You’ll often find it in low lying areas near walls, driveways, or fields. If you reckon you’ve got groundwater hanging around, it’s good news, the water should disappear when the ground dries out.
What happens if the groundwater is still hanging around my property? You may need to consult a registered plumber or drainlayer who can give you some advice on how to manage the groundwater.
Stormwater?
Stormwater is the flowing water you see down driveways and streets, it’s runoff from rain. On hard surfaces, stormwater looks like muddy puddles or a flood because the ground can’t absorb it. Stormwater shouldn’t be causing you too many issues as it will eventually soak in or flow into a waterway.
However, if you have a stormwater issue or flooding after recent rain give the council a call.
Leaks?
You can spot a leak where there is gushing water. This water is usually clear and is likely to be coming from a specific source. Leaks can pop up anywhere and at any time making them tricky to predict, but the issue is often cracked pipes due to being blocked or overflowing.
