What is the best hot water cylinder for my house?

With the weather turning and the colder months incoming, now is a good time to consider installing or upgrading your hot water cylinder. Our team has put together our top tips when it comes to selecting the right cylinder for your home and some general rules of thumb!

As a guide, the three main sizes of hot water cylinders are: 180ltr, 250ltr, or 300ltr. The choice you make usually depends on three things; number of people, how much water you use, and space.

Number of people in your home?

This gives us a pretty good idea of your homes water usage; one person can have a much smaller cylinder than a family of five. The cylinder size needs to be large enough to provide your peak supply of hot water but if it’s heating more than this you’ll be using excess power. Therefore one of the main factors we consider when recommending the best hot water cylinder size for your home is number of people.

How much water do you use

Again this is based on number of people in your home. On average a person uses 40-60 litres per day. But this can vary especially if you’re bathing kids or have jobs/ hobbies that mean you need to be showering multiple times a day. If you’re on the higher end of the water usage spectrum we suggest you go for the 250 of 300 litre cylinders.

Something else to consider is when everyone is using the hot water, there is nothing worse than being the last one in the shower with stone cold water! If showers or washing all happen at a similar time, a bigger cylinder will help cope with this load.

How much space do you have?

The availability of space ultimately determines what hot water cylinder you choose. As a rough guide a 300 litre cylinder is around 1815 x 580mm. If you’re short on space, you could also consider moving your cylinder outside.

If you’re still needing some help choosing what’s right for you, get in touch with our team, they will be happy to help as well as provide any other hot water services.
