As Kiwis we all reckon DIY is one of the best ways to suss a problem but sometimes Googling and DIYing isn’t always the best option. DIY work can result in expensive mistakes, safety issues, possible fines, or issues with your insurance, and might make it difficult to sell your house in the future. So, here’s our advice when it comes to what plumbing you can and can’t DIY.
Going Into DIY season
As summer and the holidays creep up on us, everyone seems to become DIY enthusiasts. We can tell you for free that plumbing DIY can turn pretty nasty, pretty quick. Follow along to find out the dos and don’ts ahead of your DIY season and give us a call if you need a hand.
Plumbing work I can do myself
Sometimes you can’t hold off for a plumber and some issues can be easy to fix, if you know what you’re doing. Taps leaking, getting a bit wobbly, or just not working up to standard, are annoying and happen fairly regularly. Lucky for you, there are some quick fixes to take care of broken taps and these types of jobs are not restricted so you can go for gold.
Usually, these problems are caused by wear and tear, so simply replacing the tap or doing a bit of maintenance should fix the problem, saving you money and time. But if you’re unsure give us a call and we can send a plumber to help you out!
Plumber jobs
There are some jobs that you need to leave to the experts due to regulations around this type of work, for you and your homes safety.
Can I do gasfitting work at home?
It is illegal to install or alter any gas appliance in your home by yourself. You’ll need to get yourself a Certified Gasfitter to carry out any jobs for gas hobs, gas hot water, or other gas appliances.
Can I fix my own pipes?
You also cannot alter any pipework as it is restricted. Piping is not a do-it-yourself job, requiring a specific skillset and some dangerous work that you need to understand how to do safely. Call a professional if you’ve got blocked, clogged, or burst pipes.
Can I fix my own drains?
Stormwater or sewerage drains not doing their job can be real pain, but drainage is not a DIY job. Only licensed drainlayers can repair or replace drains underground or outside your home. More damage may be done than good if you try to fix blocked or broken drains yourself. Call a Master Drainlayer, who can help identify and fix your drainage problem.
It’s important to get this work carried out by certified plumbers, gasfitters, and drainlayers for quality work and to also protect your home. Call us on 0800 226 427 to book a plumber to have your job done right.
