Plumbers, gasfitters, and drainlayers, here’s everything you need to know about training to become qualified, registered, and certified.
Auckland Plumbers, Gasfitters, and Drainlayers
Plumbers, gasfitters, and drainlayers are responsible for assembling, installing, and repairing fixtures for water and gas supply and waste removal systems. Majority of work in this industry is restricted for professionals and illegal for a homeowner to carry out.
Under the Plumbers, Gasfitters and Drainlayers Act 2006, the Plumbers, Gasfitters and Drainlayers Board of New Zealand sets out the minimum standards for registration, and is responsible for ensuring each person demonstrates the knowledge, skills and capabilities to carry out regulated work. This is to ensure you and your homes safety.

How long does it take to become a Qualified Auckland Plumber?
If you’re skeptical of a plumbers qualification, let us give you the low down on our training and experience. Completing an apprenticeship to become qualified takes five and a half years! In this time apprentices study and work fulltime to learn the unique skillset required for plumbing, gasfitting and drainlaying. Apprentices attend off-site block courses and exams to ultimately gain a level 4 certificate in plumbing, gasfitting and drainlaying.
Registered Auckland Plumbers
After completing an apprenticeship these tradespeople must also be registered with the Plumbers, Gasfitters and Drainlayers Board and hold a practising licence. Registration requires all standards of the board to be met and renewed before expiry. There are also varying fees associated with each class of registration and all classes require annual renewal.
Certified Auckland Plumbers
But that’s just the beginning. Campbell Plumbing and Gasfitting are Certifying Plumbers, the highest plumbing and gasfitting qualification. This requires an additional two year standdown period before you can start the qualification. Passing the certifying exam means the plumber or gasfitter has demonstrated the advanced skills and knowledge required to test and certify their own work or others they are supervising. Certified plumbers must have their trade license for at least 24 months too.
That’s a pretty long time in our books! And we don’t even walk away with a doctors title afterwards, despite the rigorous amount of study and work that go into a certifying registration.
Auckland Master Plumbers, Gasfitters, and Drainlayers
Campbell Plumbing and Gasfitting are also Master Plumbers and Gasfitters servicing Auckland Central, West Auckland, Norwest, North Shore Auckland, and South Auckland. Master tradesmen represent excellence. The Master tick of approval is a 12-month guarantee protecting the consumer for advance payments and substandard workmanship. Hiring a Master Plumber, Drainlayer, or Gasfitter means you’re getting a highly trusted tradie who is a competent worker.
